The Journal of Japanese Bathing

The country where bathing is
a culture, not a spa day.

Onsen, sento and sauna — seen through the eyes of a Japanese sauna producer who designs private bathing itineraries for European travellers. Not a list of facilities. A way in.

Where to go, and why it matters

Six ways into Japan's bathing culture: distinctive places, practical guidance, and the ideas reshaping how Japan bathes.

Market analysis · The Culture

The boom that rebuilt the Japanese sauna.

Between 2019 and 2022, Japan's sauna market went from a private habit to a defined industry. What the numbers show about löyly, the cold plunge, and the rise of the heat masters — and what they don't yet prove.

Bathing 101

What to know before you step inside

The three things that make Western visitors hesitate at the door — answered plainly, so you can walk in like you belong.

01

Yes, you bathe nude

Bathing nude is the norm in communal baths, which are single-sex almost everywhere. A small towel is fine for modesty — just keep it out of the water. For most first-timers, the awkwardness fades quickly.

02

The tattoo question

Many baths still refuse tattoos — a legacy rule, not personal. Some welcome them openly; others accept approved cover patches or offer reservable private baths. We map the ones we've verified.

03

Wash before you soak

The tub is for soaking, never washing. Sit, scrub and rinse fully at the shower stations first — the one rule that matters most in communal bathing.

Travel with the editor

We design
bathing journeys across Japan.

This journal isn't written from a desk. Its editor is a working sauna producer who guides visiting guests through Japan's baths — navigating reservations, house rules and first-come queues, and explaining the etiquette as you go.

If you'd rather not decode it alone, we build private bathing itineraries: the right baths, the right order, the right pace — tailored to your route, schedule and interests.
